In recent news, NASA has revealed the astronauts who will helm the first crewed moon mission in five decades. This historic Artemis II lunar flyby is set to take off in November 2024. The astronauts, including NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, will now begin their training for this momentous mission.

Reid Wiseman is a decorated naval aviator and test pilot who has been with NASA since 2009. He has previously completed a spaceflight to the International Space Station in 2014 and currently serves as the commander of the Artemis II mission.

Jeremy Hansen, a fighter pilot from the Canadian Space Agency, is one of only four active Canadian astronauts. He will become the first Canadian to travel to deep space.

Victor Glover, a naval aviator, recently returned from his first spaceflight in 2021 after piloting SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft. He will be a key member of the Artemis II mission.

Christina Koch, a veteran of six spacewalks and the first woman to complete an all-female spacewalk, brings her expertise as an electrical engineer to the Artemis II crew. She holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.

This mission will build on the success of Artemis I, an uncrewed test mission that sent NASA’s Orion capsule on a voyage around the moon. If all goes according to plan, Artemis II will launch in November 2024 and last approximately 10 days. The crew will travel beyond the moon, potentially surpassing any previous human space travel distance.

Artemis II is expected to open doors for the Artemis III mission later this decade, which aims to land the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface. NASA is targeting a 2025 launch date for Artemis III, with the goal of establishing a permanent lunar outpost and eventually sending humans to Mars.
