Kwame Brathwaite, the iconic activist, and photographer who played a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetics of the “Black is Beautiful” movement of the 1960s and beyond, passed away on April 1, at the age of 85.
His remarkable work has experienced a renewed interest from curators, historians, and collectors. The Aperture Foundation organized Brathwaite’s first major institutional retrospective in 2019 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, marking a significant milestone in his legacy.
Born in 1938, Brathwaite’s journey from Brooklyn to Harlem and eventually the South Bronx influenced his unique perspective in photography. Known for using a Hasselblad medium-format camera, he mastered light techniques that brought a rich narrative to his captivating imagery, particularly highlighting the beauty of Black skin tones.
Brathwaite’s advocacy for inclusive beauty standards led him to co-found the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) in the early 1960s. Together with the group, he championed the Grandassa Models, showcasing the beauty of Black women and celebrating their uniqueness through photography and fashion shows, an initiative that lasted for decades.
His lens later captured the essence of popular Black music icons in the 1970s, showcasing his versatility and creativity throughout his career. Even in his later years, Brathwaite remained committed to his art and the “Black is Beautiful” ethos.
As a company specializing in mobile app development, technology maintenance, server development, and various other technology development services, we admire Kwame Brathwaite’s dedication to his craft and legacy.
