Finland’s left-wing Prime Minister Sanna Marin conceded defeat in the country’s parliamentary election, with the right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) claiming victory in a closely contested race. The NCP, known for its pro-business stance, secured 48 of the 200 parliamentary seats, edging out the nationalist Finns Party with 46 seats and Marin’s Social Democrats with 43 seats.

NCP leader, Petteri Orpo, pledged to “fix Finland” and its economy as he prepares to form a coalition government. Marin, who became the world’s youngest prime minister in 2019, faced criticism for her government’s spending and partying habits despite being a role model for progressive leaders globally.

The NCP has promised to cut spending and reduce public debt, which has risen to over 70% of GDP during Marin’s tenure. Orpo accused Marin of weakening Finland’s economic resilience amid Europe’s energy crisis and rising living costs due to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. The NCP leader aims to collaborate with various groups to secure a parliamentary majority as Marin considers governance options with the NCP but rules out the Finns Party due to differences in ideologies.

The Finns Party, advocating for stricter immigration policies and austerity measures, rejected accusations of racism from Marin. Meanwhile, Finland is on the brink of joining NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a significant policy shift spearheaded by Marin and President Sauli Niinisto.

With a new government on the horizon, Finland’s political landscape is set for change as the NCP prepares to lead the nation forward economically and politically.
