The recent Finnish parliamentary election saw Prime Minister Sanna Marin of the left-wing party conceding defeat to the right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP), who claimed victory in a closely contested race. The NCP, focusing on pro-business initiatives, secured 48 seats in the 200-seat parliament, edging past the nationalist Finns Party with 46 seats and Marin’s Social Democrats with 43 seats.
NCP leader Petteri Orpo, expressing determination to “fix Finland” and its economy, is set to form a coalition to secure a parliamentary majority. Marin’s tenure as prime minister ends with the defeat.
Despite being a global millennial role model for progressive leadership, Marin faced domestic criticism for government spending under her administration, particularly on pensions and education. The NCP’s focus on curbing expenditure and reducing public debt struck a chord with voters, as Finland grappled with economic challenges exacerbated by external factors like the European energy crisis.
Orpo accused Marin of weakening Finland’s economic resilience amid the energy crisis and rising costs of living. While Orpo aims to collaborate with various groups to obtain a parliamentary majority, Marin has ruled out partnering with the Finns Party, whom she previously labeled as “openly racist.”
The Finns Party’s agenda includes reducing immigration from outside the EU and implementing austerity measures to control deficit spending, aligning with NCP’s policies. Marin’s foreign policy shift towards seeking NATO membership following Russia’s actions in Ukraine has been a significant development, with Finland expected to join the alliance soon.
