The recently announced team set to helm the first crewed moon mission in five decades is composed of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency. The quartet is gearing up for training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby scheduled for launch in November 2024.
Wiseman, decorated naval aviator and test pilot, will lead the Artemis II mission. 47-year-old Hansen, a fighter pilot from the Canadian Space Agency, will become the first Canadian to venture into deep space. Koch, a veteran spacewalker and electrical engineer, emphasized the honor of being a part of the team heading back to the moon and onward to Mars. The Artemis II mission will follow the successful uncrewed Artemis I test mission, with a launch targeted for November 2024 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
This mission, expected to last about 10 days, will take the crew beyond the moon and pave the way for the Artemis III mission, set to land the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface later this decade.
