Twitter’s classic bird icon has been swapped out for an image of a Shiba Inu in a noteworthy move that seems to reference dogecoin, the playful cryptocurrency that CEO Elon Musk is currently facing a lawsuit over.
Musk acknowledged the switch on Monday by tweeting, “as promised” along with a screenshot of a year-old chat where another user suggested that Musk should “just buy Twitter” and “change the bird logo to a doge.”
The appearance of the doge logo on the platform happened just two days after Musk sought to dismiss a $258 billion racketeering lawsuit that accused him of operating a pyramid scheme to elevate dogecoin, as reported by Reuters.
Musk and Tesla’s attorneys dismissed the lawsuit by dogecoin investors as a “fantastical creation” rooted in Musk’s “harmless and frequently silly tweets.”
It remains uncertain whether the alteration to the logo is permanent, especially given Musk’s penchant for playfulness and provocation on the platform.
Meanwhile, the value of dogecoin, known for its fluctuations, surged over 20% in the last 24 hours, reaching around 9 cents, up from just under 8 cents on Monday morning.
Originally minted as a joke on December 6, 2013, by a duo of software engineers, dogecoin pays homage to the “doge” meme that gained popularity ten years ago. The cryptocurrency’s Shiba Inu mascot echoes that meme, portraying a dog amidst a mass of Comic Sans text written in broken English.
