Kwame Brathwaite, the visionary activist and photographer who played a crucial role in shaping the aesthetics of the “Black is Beautiful” movement in the 1960s, passed away on April 1 at the age of 85. His son, Kwame Brathwaite, Jr, shared the news of his passing on Instagram, calling his father the family’s rock and a true hero.
Brathwaite’s groundbreaking work has been gaining renewed attention from curators, historians, and collectors in recent years. In 2019, his first major retrospective, organized by the Aperture Foundation, premiered at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles before embarking on a nationwide tour.
Born in 1938 to Barbadian immigrants, Brathwaite was raised in New York City and developed a passion for photography early on. He honed his craft with a Hasselblad medium-format camera, mastering the use of light to enhance the visual storytelling in his images. Brathwaite captured iconic jazz performances by legends like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk with a keen eye for preserving the mood and essence of the music.
In the early 1960s, Brathwaite and his organization, the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS), challenged conventional beauty standards by featuring Black models known as the Grandassa Models in their work. This pioneering approach celebrated Black beauty and cultural identity, leading to the famed “Naturally ’62” fashion show and inspiring a movement that endured for decades.
Brathwaite’s photography expanded to document popular Black musicians of the 1970s, including Nina Simone, Bob Marley, and Stevie Wonder. His work continued to evolve, staying true to the “Black is Beautiful” philosophy throughout his career.
