The quartet, consisting of NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, are set to begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby in November 2024.
47-year-old Reid Wiseman, a naval aviator and test pilot, will serve as the commander of the Artemis II mission. Wiseman, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, is a seasoned astronaut with prior experience on a 165-day trip to the International Space Station.
Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, a fighter pilot from London, Ontario, will become the first Canadian to venture into deep space. Victor Glover, a naval aviator born in Pomona, California, brings extensive experience with his prior spaceflight piloting SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft. Christina Koch, an electrical engineer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, will also join the prestigious crew.
The Artemis II mission will follow the success of Artemis I, a test mission that sent NASA’s Orion capsule on a voyage to loop the moon. The upcoming Artemis II mission is set to launch in November 2024, with a crew of astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft atop NASA’s Space Launch System rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The mission is expected to last approximately 10 days, journeying beyond the moon, further than any human has traveled before. Following a moon orbit, the spacecraft will return to Earth for a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean, paving the way for the future Artemis missions, including the goal of landing the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface.
Artemis III is the next ambitious step, aiming for a launch later in the decade, with the implementation of new technology and lunar landing systems. NASA’s Artemis program is dedicated to establishing a permanent lunar outpost to propel the path towards Mars exploration.
