A group of astronauts who will take part in the first crewed moon mission in 50 years were introduced, heralding the beginning of their training for the significant Artemis II lunar flyby scheduled to launch in November 2024. The astronauts chosen for this mission are NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency.
Reid Wiseman, the commander of the Artemis II mission, is an exceptional naval aviator with a rich background in piloting who has withstood rigorous astronaut training. Jeremy Hansen, another member, is a fighter pilot and the first Canadian to be selected for deep space travel. Victor Glover, a naval aviator, brings invaluable experience in spaceflight after a lengthy stay aboard the International Space Station. Christina Koch, an electrical engineer with an impressive spacewalk record, is an integral part of this diverse and skilled team.
This pioneering mission, building upon the success of Artemis I, will see the crew travel beyond the moon’s orbit on a journey that will set new records in human exploration. The Artemis program is paving the way for milestones like the Artemis III mission, promising a lunar landing by the first woman and person of color later this decade. Exciting advancements in spacesuits and lunar landing technology are in progress to make this vision a reality.
