Twitter recently made a surprising change by replacing its traditional bird icon with an image of a Shiba Inu, seemingly paying homage to dogecoin, the humorous cryptocurrency that Elon Musk is currently facing a lawsuit over. Musk, CEO of Tesla and known for his eccentric behavior on social media, addressed the alteration by tweeting, “as promised,” along with an image of a year-old conversation where a user suggested changing the bird logo to a doge image after Musk buys Twitter.
The doge logo made its debut on the platform just two days subsequent to Musk’s plea to a judge to dismiss a $258 billion racketeering lawsuit accusing him of engaging in a pyramid scheme to endorse dogecoin. According to Reuters, lawyers representing Musk and Tesla dismissed the lawsuit filed by dogecoin investors as a “fanciful work of fiction” stemming from Musk’s harmless and often whimsical tweets.
It remains uncertain whether the logo switch is a permanent one, as Musk has a history of utilizing Twitter to play tricks on both his followers and adversaries. Meanwhile, the value of dogecoin, known for its unpredictability, surged over 20% in the last 24 hours, reaching about 9 cents, after hovering just under 8 cents the previous day.
Dogecoin, conceived by two software engineers on December 6, 2013, as a jest, pays tribute to the “doge” meme that gained popularity ten years ago. The cryptocurrency’s Shiba Inu mascot reflects the essence of that meme—depicting a dog encircled by Comic Sans text in broken English.
