A source familiar with the matter tells CNN that the Chinese spy balloon that traversed the US earlier this year captured imagery and collected signals intelligence from US military sites. The balloon was capable of transmitting information back to Beijing in real time. The US government is unsure if the Chinese government could wipe the balloon’s data as it was being received, raising concerns about intelligence that may still be unknown to the US. However, the intelligence community is not overly concerned as the data collected is not more sophisticated than what Chinese satellites can gather orbiting similar locations.

The US was able to predict the balloon’s path, protecting sensitive sites and censoring signals before it could intercept them. The FBI is examining the balloon to understand its functionality. Officials have learned how the device worked, including its software algorithms, power source, and design.

Gen. Glen VanHerck stated that the balloon did not present a significant collection hazard beyond existing technical means from China. The surveillance program, operated in part from Hainan, has conducted numerous missions globally. Roughly half a dozen flights have entered US airspace, though not necessarily over US territory.

China claims the balloon was a weather balloon off course, but the US believes China maintained some control. Once over Montana, China loitered over sensitive sites to gather intelligence. CNN reached out to the National Security Council and the Pentagon for comments on this developing story.
