Four astronauts selected by NASA for historic first crewed moon mission in half a century

NASA has revealed the astronauts slated to lead the first crewed moon mission in 50 years. The quartet – Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch from NASA, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency – will soon begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby mission scheduled for November 2024.

Reid Wiseman, a 47-year-old naval aviator with decorated credentials, will command the Artemis II mission. Wiseman, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, with a successful spaceflight on his record, has recently transitioned back to flight assignment eligibility after serving as chief of the astronaut office.

Jeremy Hansen, a 47-year-old fighter pilot from London, Ontario, will become the first Canadian astronaut to venture into deep space. Victor Glover, a naval aviator, brings extensive military and flight experience to the team. Glover, originally from Pomona, California, made history upon his first spaceflight as part of the SpaceX Crew-1 team.

Christina Koch, a 44-year-old astronaut, who broke records for her extensive time in space, including the first all-female spacewalk. Koch’s deep space mission will build on the success of Artemis I, the uncrewed test mission that orbited the moon in December.

Artemis II is a significant step towards NASA’s Artemis program, aiming to establish a permanent lunar outpost. The mission is set to take off in November 2024 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with a ten-day journey that will potentially exceed prior human travel limits beyond the moon.

The team behind Artemis II symbolizes diversity and inclusion, comprised of men and women, highlighting a departure from historical missions dominated by White male test pilots. The selection process, while confidential, underscores NASA’s commitment to assembling a well-rounded crew for future space expeditions.
