The astronauts who will command the first crewed moon mission in 50 years were announced on Monday, preparing to begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby scheduled for November 2024. The team includes NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, as well as Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency.

Reid Wiseman, a naval aviator and test pilot, will lead the Artemis II mission. Jeremy Hansen, a fighter pilot from the Canadian Space Agency, will be the first Canadian astronaut to travel to deep space. Victor Glover, a naval aviator, piloted SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft during his first spaceflight in 2021. Christina Koch, an electrical engineer known for multiple spacewalks and a record-breaking 328-day stay in space, will also join the crew.

The Artemis II mission will follow Artemis I, a successful uncrewed test mission that orbited the moon in December. The crew is set to launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center atop a Space Launch System rocket in Florida. The journey, expected to last ten days, includes a moon flyby before returning to Earth for a Pacific Ocean splashdown.

This mission is a significant step towards Artemis III, aiming to land the first woman and person of color on the moon later this decade. It also signals NASA’s progress towards establishing a lunar outpost for prolonged human presence, ultimately advancing towards crewed missions to Mars.

This diverse crew of astronauts has expressed their excitement and honor to be part of this historic mission. An interview with the astronauts is scheduled to air on “CNN This Morning” on Tuesday at 6 am ET. Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to witness history in the making!
