French minister faces controversy over appearance on Playboy magazine cover

Marlene Schiappa, a French government minister, is facing criticism from members of her own party for her recent appearance on the front cover of Playboy magazine. Despite the backlash, Schiappa, who has been a government minister since 2017 and the current Minister for the Social Economy and French Associations, graced the cover to accompany a 12-page interview about women’s and LGBT rights. As an advocate for women’s rights and the country’s first Gender Equality Minister, Schiappa has been instrumental in pushing for policy changes that enforce gender equality.

The appearance on Playboy’s cover has sparked disapproval from political colleagues, including French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. Nevertheless, amid the social and political turmoil in France, with widespread opposition to President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms, Schiappa has remained steadfast in her commitment to advancing women’s rights.

Despite the criticism, Schiappa defended her stance via Twitter, emphasizing women’s rights to autonomy over their bodies. French Interior Minister, GĂ©rald Darmanin, came to Schiappa’s defense during a recent interview, describing her as a “woman of character.”
