In recent news, photographer Graeme Green has redefined the concept of the “Big Five” by creating a global “New Big Five” for wildlife photography. Over 50,000 people worldwide participated in the voting process to determine the top five animals they would most like to photograph or see photographed in the wild. The winners were the elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger.
To celebrate these incredible animals and raise awareness of the issues impacting wildlife, “The New Big 5” photography book is being published. The book features stunning images from renowned photographers like Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen, accompanied by essays from renowned conservationists and activists, including Jane Goodall.
Green’s vision for the project originated during his time in Botswana, where he aimed to encourage people to appreciate wildlife through the lens of a camera rather than a gun. The book showcases the work of 144 globally recognized photographers, with the curation process taking nearly two years. Green describes the images as some of the most beautiful and creative he has seen in one book, emphasizing the urgency of saving these species.
The “New Big 5” animals, like many others, are facing threats like habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change. As an ambassador for the natural world, the book highlights the urgent need for action. However, it doesn’t only focus on the problems but also offers solutions. The essays delve into the benefits of rewilding and the vital role of indigenous communities in conservation.
Beyond the “New Big 5,” the book also highlights the endangered species, from bees to blue whales, exhibiting the devastating impact of climate change. This is just the tip of the iceberg, as the situation is even more dire than depicted in the book.
Jane Goodall, an esteemed conservationist, wrote the afterword for the book, expressing hope that the photographs will inspire readers to appreciate these iconic species. She emphasizes the importance of collective action to heal the harm inflicted on the natural world, creating a future where wildlife can thrive for generations to come.
