A group of astronauts set to lead the initial crewed moon mission in 50 years was disclosed on Monday. The four members will begin gearing up for the groundbreaking Artemis II lunar flyby in November 2024. They include NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency.
Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator from Baltimore, Maryland, will lead the Artemis II mission. Meanwhile, Hansen, a fighter pilot from London, Ontario, is poised to become the first Canadian in deep space. Glover from Pomona, California, has logged extensive flight hours and completed combat missions. Koch, an electrical engineer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is no stranger to space expeditions, having even spent time at the South Pole.
The Artemis II mission will follow the successful uncrewed Artemis I test and aims to send humans further into space than ever before. It is expected to lay the groundwork for Artemis III, which is set to put the first woman and person of color on the moon. This mission is part of NASA’s overarching plan to establish a more permanent lunar presence and eventually send astronauts to Mars.
