The astronauts set to helm the first crewed moon mission in five decades were unveiled recently. NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, were named to begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby scheduled for November 2024.
Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot, will serve as the mission commander. His experience includes a 165-day trip to the International Space Station in 2014.
Hansen, a fighter pilot, will be the first Canadian astronaut to travel to deep space. Glover, a naval aviator, has logged impressive flight hours and completed numerous missions. Koch, who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, will also join the team.
The Artemis II mission will follow the success of Artemis I and send the crew out beyond the moon. The journey, scheduled for around November 2024, is expected to last about 10 days before a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean.
