Finland’s left-wing Prime Minister Sanna Marin has conceded defeat in the parliamentary election, with the right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) claiming victory. The NCP is expected to win 48 of the 200 seats in parliament, closely followed by the nationalist Finns Party and Marin’s Social Democrats.

NCP leader Petteri Orpo aims to “fix Finland” and its economy, vowing to form a coalition to secure a majority in parliament. Marin, known for her progressive leadership, faced criticism for her government’s spending.

The NCP, leading in polls for almost two years, promised to control spending and reduce public debt, contrasting Marin’s economic policies. The country’s energy crisis and rising living costs have influenced voters’ choices.

Orpo accused Marin of weakening Finland’s economic resilience, particularly during the energy crisis fueled by Russia’s actions in Ukraine. He plans to negotiate with various groups to form a majority in parliament. Marin, open to collaboration, rules out forming a government with the Finns Party.

The Finns Party advocates for immigration control and austerity measures to reduce deficit spending, aligning with the NCP’s stance. Marin’s foreign policy shift towards seeking NATO membership after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine reflects a significant transformation. Helsinki is expected to join NATO soon, following approval from all 30 member countries.
