In the recent parliamentary election in Finland, the pro-business National Coalition Party (NCP) emerged victorious, led by Petteri Orpo. The NCP is set to win 48 out of 200 parliamentary seats, narrowly beating the nationalist Finns Party and the Social Democrats. Orpo has vowed to “fix Finland” and its economy as he gears up to form a coalition government.

The outgoing Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, acknowledged defeat and expressed gratitude for the support her party received. While she remains popular among many Finns, critics have pointed to her government’s public spending and economic policies. The NCP, on the other hand, has promised fiscal responsibility and debt reduction.

Orpo has accused Marin of weakening Finland’s economic stability, especially in light of Europe’s energy crisis. He has pledged to work with all groups to secure a parliamentary majority. Marin, however, has ruled out forming a government with the Finns Party, which she has branded as “openly racist.”

Marin’s foreign policy stance on seeking NATO membership following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been a significant move. With the approval of all NATO members, Finland is set to join the alliance in the coming days.
